Balloon Sinuplasty™ Offers Relief, Quick Recovery to Millions of Sinus Sufferers
Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital expands sinus surgery offerings
TEMPE, Ariz. (April 26, 2010) – A new sinus surgery technique – balloon sinuplasty – offers patients relief from blocked sinus passages, with many people experiencing a fast return to normal breathing and drainage following treatment. The minimally-invasive procedure is now available at Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital.
Sinusitis affects 37 million people each year, making it one of the most common health problems in the U.S.
“The painful symptoms associated with chronic sinusitis can be overwhelming and can drastically impact the quality of life of sinus sufferers,” said David Mendelson, D.O., of ENT Specialists of Arizona, and former Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital. “Balloon sinuplasty is a safe and minimally-invasive treatment option that allows many patients to resume regular activities shortly after surgery.”
Balloon sinuplasty is an endoscopic, catheter-based system which uses tiny balloons to open blocked sinuses similar to the way angioplasty uses balloons to open blocked coronary arteries. The FDA-approved technology uses a small, flexible, sinus balloon catheter to open up blocked sinus passageways, restoring normal sinus drainage. When the sinus balloon is inflated, it gently restructures and widens the walls of the passageway while maintaining the integrity of the sinus lining.
According to patients like 44-year-old Mesa resident Lisa Contreras, the relief provided by the procedure is immeasurable.
“As a flight attendant, the pain and sinus pressure I experienced from chronic sinusitis was excruciating,” Contreras said. “The balloon sinuplasty procedure has changed my life. I finally feel like myself again, both at home and at work.”
The procedure, which Dr. Mendelson performs at Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital, offers a number of benefits to patients, including reduced bleeding, improved recovery time and synergy with other treatment options.
“I really enjoy resolving my patients’ nasal sinus problems and seeing them reach optimum health,” Dr. Mendelson said. “People that suffer from sinusitis and have not experienced relief from medication may be candidates for this life-changing surgery.”
The balloon sinuplasty technology is used by qualified Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) physicians nationwide.
