Our History

TSLH1948 Dr. Ernest von Pohle opened the 10-bed Tempe Clinic Hospital on March 2, 1944, with two patients. Dr. Pohle started the hospital to meet the needs of the growing military population serving at Williams Air Force Base in east Mesa. Continuing to meet the community’s healthcare needs, Dr. von Pohle established a laboratory and acquired the first X-ray machine in Tempe through the generosity of the Ford Foundation.

Tempe Clinic HospitalThe hospital underwent expansions in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s to bring it to its current 87-bed size. In 1960, Dr. Pohle transferred his ownership of the hospital to the Arizona Conference of Seventh Day Adventists who retained control until the sale to the St. Luke’s Health System in 1982. Today, Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital is owned by IASIS Healthcare, a privately held company committed to building community-focused hospital networks in high-growth markets. IASIS Healthcare owns and operates 15 general, acute care hospitals and one behavioral hospital in Arizona, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas and Utah.

Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital is equipped with sophisticated medical technology, features all private rooms, electronic health records and wireless Internet access. The hospital’s experienced team of doctors and nurses work together to provide expert care and the best possible patient experience.
